Over the past few years I’ve become fascinated by management, or far more importantly, the development of people. To me, there’s nothing like seeing people build their knowledge, achieve their hard and soft-skill goals, and progress in their careers.
So why does this interest me?
Well, I’ve worked at numerous places in my career where I felt like the people weren’t a focus at all. The leadership team only cared about the money being made, and the people that worked there were just commodities that could be replaced if needed. There was no nurturing of talent whatsoever.
What a rubbish way to look after the people that dedicate so much of their lives to you!
So when I joined my current company in 2016 – initially as the Head of SEO – I wanted to do things differently.
I wanted to put a focus on helping people to see there were opportunities for growth. A place where they could realise their ambitions, and become the very best they could be.
I wanted to help create a company where people would enjoy coming to work, and feel looked after.
In 2019 I became COO, where my primary remit is our focus on people and our culture. For a company that’s doubled its headcount consistently every single year, and with a People > Profit philosophy, this is a big responsibility.
But it’s one which I love.
I wanted to start this blog as a way to share some of my opinions, largely based on the experiences I’ve had over the years. My posts are designed to give food-for-thought – not provide all the answers.
There’s no “right way” or “wrong way” with people management. But I’m hoping that some of what I write about resonates with you, your own experiences, or help you to think about approaching things differently.
So where do I want to go? Well, more recently I have started studying for a CIPD Level 5 qualification, with a view to take on the Level 7 in the future. After 10+ years in marketing, I now know that my long-term career is pointing towards helping businesses make the most of their people, and people making the most of themselves.
